In every moment there is a stillness, a contentedness, a total and utter ease deep within our hearts. When it comes to caring for children, the amount of attentiveness it takes to keep up with their sheer level of activity can temporarily drown out our connection to that inner peace.
Finding time and space to come back to our spiritual nature, shed the stress of work, household management, caregiving… and just be with our own Self - free from expectations and a compulsive need to move on to the next task - is the most important and often skipped daily practice.
Like an old friend we used to meet up with regularly for a cup of tea and heartwarming chat, we let all kinds of reasons get in the way of reconnecting with the best friend and guide we have within.
Here is a meditation you can do while putting your children to sleep to reclaim that relationship with yourself and soothe your child at the same time.
After you have said goodnight to your kids and turned off the light. Tell them you are going to sit in the room and meditate for a few minutes.
Find a comfortable seat in a chair or on the floor.
Close your eyes. Feel the darkness of the room enveloping you, your children, and the entire room.
As the heavy darkness of night seeps into you, remind yourself that the cycle of the day is complete, night has come and that means it is time to quiet the body and mind to prepare for the rejuvenation and healing waiting for us in sleep.
All else can wait until tomorrow.
Let the buzzing feeling of the active day begin to settle down in you and all agitation and stress flow out of your body and into the earth.
Bring attention to your breath for a few moments.
Now hear the breath of your child, so innocently surrendered to the transition from day to night. The softer and more complete each of your inhalations and exhalations, the softer and more complete theirs seem to become as well. Just your silent loving presence puts them at ease.
When you feel fully relaxed, allow the sound of OM to reverberate throughout you. The sound of your voice may be quite soft, yet the vibration of OM is emanating from your deepest being, reminding you of the peace at the heart of the universe. Offer your OM as a blessing to your children, resonating with all that is healthy, calm, trusting, and loving within them.
Continue your deep and relaxed inhalations and chanting of OM for as long as you like. Naturally silence will come over you and you can sit in that room, enjoying the silence of the home and prepared for sleep to come.
See how your children respond to it when you adapt it on your own as a story about a little girl who was afraid of the dark.
